     ABOUT THE COMPANY    Alexander Whitley Dance Company was established in 2014 and presents innovative and highly crafted productions, working with leaders in digital design and technology. Whitley’s intricate choreography draws on his background in classical and contemporary dance and is noted for its strong musicality and striking visual design.

  ABOUT 8 MINUTES   In this piece choreographer Alexander Whitley takes inspiration from the stunning images and data produced by solar science research in a collaboration with space scientists from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Called 8 Minutes (as it takes 8 minutes for light from the sun to reach the earth) Whitley has worked with a composer, dramaturg, video artist, set and lighting designer to create an evening of dance, music and film inspired by scientific concepts such as gravity, orbiting and magnetism.   Read more and watch a clip here  http://www.alexanderwhitley.com/8-minutes

  ABOUT ALEXANDER WHITLEY: Director/Choreographer   Born in Penrith, choreographer Alexander Whitley trained at the Royal Ballet School. Over the course of his dance career he has performed with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Michael Clark Company, Sydney Dance Company, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance and New Movement Collective (Nominated Critics’ Circle Best Independent Company award 2013 & 2014), of which he is a founder-member. He was twice nominated for Outstanding Performance in the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards.   Alexander launched his company in 2014 with the Royal Ballet Studio commissioned work, The Measures Taken and later that year premiered The Grit in the Oyster, a Sadler’s Wells commission for Thomas Adès See the Music Hear the Dance. In 2015, he was nominated for a Sky Arts Southbank Times Breakthrough Artist award for choreography and re-staged The Grit in the Oyster in New York as part of Lincoln Center's White Light Festival. In 2016, Alexander was commissioned by Sadler’s Wells to make the interactive digital work, Pattern Recognition. Alexander is a New Wave Associate at Sadler's Wells, an Associate Artist at DanceEast and Associate of Rambert and was as an Affiliate Choreographer of the Royal Ballet Studio Programme (2012-14).   Alexander's commissioned works include:Beheld (Candoco),Frames (Rambert), The Murmuring (Balletboyz) and Kin (Birmingham Royal Ballet) and his collaboration with artists Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen (75 Watt) is now in the permanent collection of New York’s MOMA.   Watch an overview of Alexander Whitley’s work:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyr0Zob671g
